Dovehaven House is a purpose built EMI care home that provides quality care for older people who may be suffering from such problems as; Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, personality and/or behavioural disorders as well as the numerous forms of dementia. Our EMI (elderly and mentally infirm) care home is a 40 bedded home providing both long term and respite care.
We pride ourselves on both the friendly, welcoming atmosphere of our home along with our maintaining the highest standards of care for our residents. Dovehaven House has a great rural location with countryside views in the North West of England, yet remains within easy reach of Southport. Southport is a popular retirement town with a beautiful coastline and an elegant Victorian centre.
Dovehaven House is a modern, purpose built 40-bed care home. All the fully furnished bedrooms are single rooms, 15 of which have en-suite facilities and more en-suite rooms are planned for development in the future. There are bath hoists in the main bathrooms and there are also shower facilities available. We encourage our residents to furnish their rooms in their own style and with their own belongings if they so wish to. The home is divided into 2 floors (ground floor and first floor), with a lift linking both floors. There is a main lounge/dining area on each floor as well as a specialised recreational room on the ground floor, which is especially designed to give the impression of being a pub. On the first floor is a sensory room that has been professionally laid out in order to resemble the outdoors. The sensory room has a rather pleasing beach house theme. This facility boasts the latest in sensory equipment including; bubble lamps, fibre optics, projector simulators and soothing music, all of which enhance the tranquility of the experience for our esidents. The main corridors at Dovehaven House are spacious and stretch along the whole centre of the building. This allows for continuous freedom of movement for our more active residents.
Dovehaven House has two secure garden areas, firstly the courtyard, which has ample seating, a shrubbery and central water feature. The second garden area is towards the rear of the building and has an attractive countryside view that includes horses in the neighbouring field along with various forms of wildlife that are often seen. Both our outdoor areas provide pleasant, attractive surroundings to spend sunny afternoons.
At Dovehaven House we have an in-house hairdressing salon where our residents can have their hair styled at a very reasonable price. We have a local chiropodist, optical specialists and ministers of all denominations who are available to visit residents upon request.
We have a full programme of activities for our residents including an armchair exercise programme to promote physical dexterity and co-ordination. Our in-house activities co-ordinator encourages mental stimulation and creativity with a varied programme of other activities for our residents to enjoy. On regular occasions we will invite outside entertainers to come to Dovehaven House too.
We have a specially adapted minibus that we use for our weekly coach outings. This has long been a particular favourite pastime for our residents. The coach will travel to scenic locations within the local region where our residents can enjoy refreshments whilst admiring the views.
Home cooked meals prepared by our experienced cook are served daily with particular attention being paid to various forms of special dietary requirements. Our residents are all given as much or as little assistance as they may require with their dietary requirements.
PHILOSOPHY OF CARE
Our aim is to provide the best possible care for any person whom may be elderly and/or mentally infirm. Our philosophy states that elderly people with a mental disorder have the same rights as every other person and should each be treated as individuals. At Dovehaven House we promote the independence of all of our residents and we adopt a flexible and individual approach to the care of each individual. Our friendly staff make it their priority to ensure that the needs of our residents are dealt with in a professional and caring way.
We place the rights of our residents at the forefront of our philosophy of care and we seek to advance these rights in the services that we provide.
We also recognise that life in any communal setting and the administration of personal care may be inherently invasive of a person’s privacy. We therefore continually strive to promote a homely, familiar, trusting and relaxed atmosphere at Dovehaven House.
Millbrook House is owned and run by Mark & Wendy Gilbert along with their son, Luke Gilbert. All of the family have extensive experience within the care home field and are hands on owners being involved in the home on a daily basis. The manager/matron of the home is Joanne Hart, a highly experienced general trained nurse who has been managing nursing homes for over 10 years. She has gained her NVQ Registered Managers Award in Management and has also an NVQ in Mentoring. She is ably assisted in running the home by a strong team of registered mental health nurses. Along with the administrative team she has the overall responsibility for the co-ordination of the various teams who work in the nursing home. As our emphasis is on quality of care, the staff team are handpicked to ensure that they have the necessary personality, genuine caring attitude and experience to meet the demands of their chosen profession. Linda Birch, deputy manager, a team of 6 registered nurses and 18 care staff, as well as support staff, ably assist Jan in the running of the home. The majority of care staff have either already gained their NVQ in Care or are working towards it. We also invest heavily in additional training for the staff team involving more specialist course pertaining to mental health and dementia care. Our catering team, comprising of a head chef, part time cook and kitchen assistants are a valued part of the home’s team in maintaining a high standard of meal preparation, catering to individual taste and the medical needs of all clients. Our menus are regularly reviewed and changes made in accordance with client and family views and comments. We have a food comments book that all clients, family and visitors are encouraged to enter their views and suggestions in. The remaining support staff consists of our valued domestic, laundry and maintenance staff who ensure that all the home is clean, free from unpleasant odours, personal laundry is under control and the environment of the home is welcoming and well maintained.
