Millbrook EMI Nursing Home is in Southport in the North West of England, which is a traditional seaside retirement town with a beautiful coastline and an elegant Victorian centre.

This is a purpose built nursing home that caters for older people suffering from all forms of dementia and associated mental health conditions.

At Millbrook we aim to provide care for each individual based on a thorough holistic assessment process. We strive to focus on the positives and encourage independence where possible.

Our EMI nursing home has 50 single rooms, 42 of which are en-suite, providing care for both long term and respite clients. Our home is in the enviable position of having extensive living spaces which provides the more mobile client plenty of scope for exploring and being able to find quiet areas for alone time.

All our clients are treated as individuals- with the respect and dignity that they deserve.

ACCOMMODATION

Millbrook House is a purpose built residential home, which features all the living areas on the ground floor and bedroom areas on three floors that are serviced by a modern passenger lift to provide an excellent level of nursing home care.

The living spaces are both spacious and plentiful so as to provide clients ample room to explore, wander freely around, as well as being able to find that quiet area for some down time.

All our 50 rooms are single 42 of which are en-suite. All rooms are tastefully decorated and we encourage our service users to personalise their rooms with their own items of furniture, pictures and ornaments. Each bedroom wing has its own specially adapted bathroom and a total of four different type of bathrooms are available within the home, which enable us to cater to all levels of disability.

We have a sheltered, secure garden courtyard, with benches and additional seating areas maintained by our gardeners.

SERVICES

We have a specially designed relaxation room, Snoozelam, which incorporates a bubble tube, fibre optic wall carpet, ceiling twirler and projector. This facility is used by all service users on a one-on-one basis as well as in small groups for both relaxation and has been proven to reduce levels of agitation and wandering. The Snoozelam is used as part of our full and varied activity programme, which enhances the quality of life for all our service users. Activities on offer include reminiscence, crafts, quizzes, games and trips out in our own minibus.

We have a team of domestic and laundry staff who support the care staff in providing an essential service to all our clients.

We encourage outside professionals to visit and support the home, these include a hairdresser, chiropodist, dentist, optician, clergy as well as the clients own GP’s. The home also has close links with the community mental health nurses and psychiatrist’s.

PHILOSOPHY OF CARE

At Millbrook House we aim to deliver a holistic resident-centred care package to all of our clients by putting the individual first and not their condition.

Our focus is on the individual’s abilities and strengths and not focused on their problems or what they are no longer able to do.

We believe that full involvement by all family/friends is of paramount importance to the continuing health and welfare of our clients. To this end full and open communication between all parties is encouraged at all times, as demonstrated by our personal care booklets which help all parties involved in the care of the client to get to know each resident as an individual person.

All clients have personalised care plans that are written in a positive manner that encourages as much independence as possible, giving each and every client choices over as many aspects of daily living as possible.

At Millbrook we are very proud of our professional staff and invest heavily in the recruitment and training of our team. The care of clients with dementia and associated mental health conditions takes time, patience and empathy. Our staff team are well versed in how to cater to the clients needs, anticipate their requirements and spend time daily to ensure that each client is valued for who they are.

The introduction of the key worker system has enhanced this philosophy and team members are encouraged to spend quality one to one time with their allocated clients over and above the normal interactions that take place daily

STAFF

Millbrook House is owned and run by Mark & Wendy Gilbert along with their son, Luke Gilbert. All of the family have extensive experience within the care home field and are hands on owners being involved in the home on a daily basis. The manager/matron of the home is Joanne Hart, a highly experienced general trained nurse who has been managing nursing homes for over 10 years. She has gained her NVQ Registered Managers Award in Management and has also an NVQ in Mentoring. She is ably assisted in running the home by a strong team of registered mental health nurses. Along with the administrative team she has the overall responsibility for the co-ordination of the various teams who work in the nursing home. As our emphasis is on quality of care, the staff team are handpicked to ensure that they have the necessary personality, genuine caring attitude and experience to meet the demands of their chosen profession. Linda Birch, deputy manager, a team of 6 registered nurses and 18 care staff, as well as support staff, ably assist Jan in the running of the home. The majority of care staff have either already gained their NVQ in Care or are working towards it. We also invest heavily in additional training for the staff team involving more specialist course pertaining to mental health and dementia care. Our catering team, comprising of a head chef, part time cook and kitchen assistants are a valued part of the home’s team in maintaining a high standard of meal preparation, catering to individual taste and the medical needs of all clients. Our menus are regularly reviewed and changes made in accordance with client and family views and comments. We have a food comments book that all clients, family and visitors are encouraged to enter their views and suggestions in. The remaining support staff consists of our valued domestic, laundry and maintenance staff who ensure that all the home is clean, free from unpleasant odours, personal laundry is under control and the environment of the home is welcoming and well maintained.
